Paul, there are temporary road mats you can buy for the purpose of having vehicles go on grass without destroying it all, you see them are temporary events here in the UK at least, not sure what they are called though, they are like a lattice of thick rubber. Could help you avoid destroying your yard when you get these projects going.

There should be no reason you can't make a viewing window in your concrete pond,unless money is the factor. If the base is the wrong wood you're going to have structural problems of the years. Marine qualify wood should do it for you or teak or maybe cypress(?).

A concrete pond can never compare to the fiberglass pond you had in mind at first. Regardless of the filtration system you put in, the concrete floor and the concrete walls are going to be covered with algae and in no time, the water will become even more cloudy than the one in the pool ponds that you currently have and you won't even be able to see the fish you have inside. The fiberglass surface - on the other hand - being slippery surface, is not a substrate onto which algae can stick to with ease. Furthermore, it COULD NEVER have the look of your pool, unless you plan to pour CHLORINE in it and kill your fish. So paying less is not always the best. Besides, they ripped you off! An 20' x 8' rectangular box doesn't cost 8 thousand dollars. You could build a pool for less than that with the filter, skimmer, etc.

Hey Paul if you still have those pool ponds I live in South Florida and would love to get them from you to start a pool pond. I have had redtails and oscars before but I gave them away to a friend when they got to big for my tanks. Please like for Paul to see
